The Minimum Support Price (MSP) is an advisory price signal that is part of a larger set of agricultural policies in some parts of India. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by PM Shri Modi, has approved the increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all mandated Rabi crops for the marketing season 2023-24. After receiving the recommendations of the MSP Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture recommended an increase in the MSP of some rabi crops.
After this, it was sent to the Union Cabinet for approval. MSP is the rate at which the government buys food grains from farmers. Minimum Support Prices of Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2023-24
The MSP for wheat has been increased by Rs 110 from Rs 2,015 per quintal in 2022-23 to Rs 2,125 per quintal in 2023-24, while the MSP for barley has been increased by Rs 100 from Rs 1,635 per quintal to Rs 1,735 per quintal. The minimum support price of chana has been increased by Rs 105 from Rs 5,230 per quintal to Rs 5,335 per quintal, while the MSP of safflower has been increased by Rs 209 from Rs 5,441 to Rs 5,650. The MSP of sarson and mustard has been increased by Rs 400 from Rs 5,050 to Rs 5,450 per quintal.
The highest increase in MSP has been approved for masoor dal, which has been increased by Rs 500 from Rs 5,500 to Rs 6,000. The minimum Support Price is the guaranteed price from the government for their produce. The main objective is to support farmers through distress sales and to procure food grains for public distribution. In case the market price of the commodity is less than the declared minimum price due to bumper production and surplus in the market, the government agencies procure the entire quantity from the farmers at the declared minimum price.
